Our Experience

Much of the company's expertise is gained from a range of analysis projects carried out for large engineering companies in the automotive, rail, aerospace and off-shore industries. These include BAE Systems, Caterpillar, Bombardier Transportation and Cooper Cameron.

Examples of our off-shore and process industry expertise include structural and thermal analysis of heating units, economisers, pressure vessels and sub-sea equipment. We are able to qualify parts to ASME div II and BS5500, including shakedown, ratchetting and fatigue. We have also carried out plastic collapse and buckling assessments of sub-sea equipment.

We are experienced in structural analysis of rail, off highway and other specialist vehicles, including deriving load case specifications, static stress, fatigue, frequency response and buckling analyses.

We have carried out comprehensive analysis programmes of various power units for automotive, aerospace and power generation suppliers. As well as thermo-mechanical and durability analyses, we have developed non-linear strategies to represent combined bolting, contact and gasket analyses.

Some examples of industry applications include:

Rail - structural assessments of full DMU bodies, major structural members and component parts, including deriving load case specifications

Aluminium DMU body

Defence - full structural and dynamic assessment and load specification for off-highway vehicles

Stresses from off-highway vehicle frequency response

For more detail, see Technical Review 3

Low and high cycle fatigue - calculations to various aerospace, rail and pressure equipment standards, including BS5500, BS7608, BS8118 and ASME Div II.

S-N Curve for compressor blade material

For more detail, see Technical Review 2

Weld and bolted joint fatigue - assessments of steel and aluminium from finite element results, for rail and defence using various methods, and in conjunction with British Standards

Direction of principal stress in relation to weld

For more detail, see Technical Review 4

Our Service

We provide analysis of a wide range of engineering problems involving stress, fatigue of components, welds and bolted joints, heat transfer, vibration, contact and buckling.

We are approved by the DTI to provide design calculations and finite element analysis to small and medium sized manufacturing companies (SMEs). Our aim is to apply best practice to your engineering design problem, by drawing on our wide experience of different industries and analysis types. (More information about our DTI approved service is available here.)

Typical projects that qualify for DTI funding are:

  • Investigating in-service failures

  • Providing calculations to comply with legislation (for example, CE marking)

  • Resolving technical queries from your customers

  • Structural assessment or validation of a new or existing design
